An SEO plugin doesn’t boost a website’s search ranking. It removes technical barriers and provides convenient fields for titles and descriptions—after that, it’s all about the content. But without it, you’d have to edit the code manually, so you really do need to choose one. Let’s take a look at the four main options.
Comparison
| Plugin | Free version | Paid, approximate | Who is it for? | Weak spot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rank Math | The Most Generous: Most of What You Need Is Already Here | About $7/month, unlimited websites | For those who don't want to pay and run several websites | There are so many settings—it's easy to overcomplicate things |
| Yoast SEO | Basics: Headings, Descriptions, Sitemap, Markup | about $99/year for one website | For those who value stability and compatibility | Expensive when using multiple websites |
| AIOSEO | Truncated | Starting at ~$50/year, pricing for 10 and 100 websites | Online Stores on WooCommerce | Actively promotes its own paid features |
| SEOPress | Honest, with no ads inside | About $49 per year; there is a plan for an unlimited number | For agencies and anyone who values clean code | A smaller community, fewer Ukrainian-language instructions |
Prices are subject to change—please check the developers' websites. Current comparisons: Odd Jar, Belov Digital.
Which one should I choose?
One website and no budget — Rank Math. The free version includes almost everything a small business needs.
One website, predictability is key — Yoast. It’s supported by all themes and page builders, and any issue has already been covered online.
Several websites — SEOPress or Rank Math: Paying for each site separately, as you do with Yoast, quickly gets expensive.
Store — AIOSEO or Rank Math: They handle products, categories, and price markup better.
What else might come in handy, besides the essentials?
- Redirection — Managing 301 redirects. Required if you're changing page URLs.
- Caching Plugin — Speed has a greater impact on rankings than most SEO settings. Find out exactly what to check in this article About Website Speed.
- Image Optimization — either a plugin or Compress manually before uploading: That way, there's less load on the server.
The main rule: only one
Using two SEO plugins at the same time is the most common mistake. Both add canonical tags, both generate microdata and meta tags, and as a result, the page ends up submitting two copies of each. The search engine sees conflicting instructions and chooses one on its own.
Switch from one to the other—first transfer the data using the built-in import feature, and only then delete the old one.
The mistake we see most often
The plugin is installed and configured, but the meta tags are still duplicated. The problem usually isn't with the plugin, but with the theme: the developer hard-coded and the description right in the template. It turns out there are two headings on the page—one from the theme and one from the plugin.
We've encountered this on this site as well: the thread had the same title on all pages, so the search engine treated them as duplicates. This isn't fixed through the plugin's settings, but by editing the template—the theme needs to give control of the title to the plugin.
You can check your website in just a minute using our a meta tag checker: It will display the title, description, and H1 of any page.
What an SEO plugin doesn't do
- Does not write content. The green circle labeled “optimized” simply means that the keyword appears the desired number of times.
- It doesn't provide any links. A website's authority is built externally.
- It does not correct the structure. If there is no separate page for a query, no plugin will create one.
- Does not guarantee rankings. Anyone who promises top rankings through plugin settings is selling a pipe dream.
The plugin handles about 20% of the work—the technical aspects. The remaining 80% consists of the site's structure, text, and links. We've outlined where to start in this article SEO for a New Website.
In Brief
Rank Math — if you want a free plugin with lots of features. Yoast — if you want a reliable plugin for a single website. SEOPress — if you have multiple websites. AIOSEO — if you have an online store. The main thing is: don’t install two at the same time, and don’t expect a plugin to do things it can’t do.
