How Much Does Website Development Cost: What Factors Determine the Price

The question “How much does a website cost?” comes up in the very first email from almost every client. The honest answer: the price depends not on the number of pages, but on how many unique solutions need to be designed and programmed. Below, we’ll explain what makes up the budget and why two proposals that look identical can differ by a factor of three.

What Makes Up the Price

The development cost is the sum of four components, each of which can be calculated separately:

  • Design. Page structure, user flows, prototypes. This is the stage that’s most often skipped—and that’s exactly why the design ends up being reworked later.
  • Design. The homepage costs more than the internal pages because it sets the tone for the entire project. Mobile responsiveness is a separate scope of work, not a “free bonus.”
  • Layout and Programming. The front end is what the user sees. The back end consists of the admin panel, forms, integrations, and the database.
  • Filling and Start-up. Text, photos, website migration to a hosting provider, SSL, analytics setup, basic SEO optimization.

Approximate ranges

These are the price ranges for most projects on the Ukrainian market. The exact figure depends on the complexity:

Website Type Term What's Included
Landing Page 2–3 weeks One page, application form, responsive
Corporate Website 4–8 weeks 5–15 pages, blog, forms, basic SEO
Online Store 8–16 weeks Catalog, Shopping Cart, Payment, Shipping, CRM
Service or web application 3 months and up Personal accounts, APIs, complex logic

What Really Affects the Budget

Number of unique layouts

A 40-page website, where 35 pages are based on a single template, costs less than an 8-page website where each page is designed individually. Don't count the pages; instead, unique layouts.

Integrations

Payment processing, delivery services, CRM, 1C, messaging apps—each integration requires its own technical specifications, testing, and error handling. A single non-standard integration can cost as much as half the price of the entire website.

Content

If the text and photos are already ready, you’ll see significant savings. If you need to write and shoot them, set aside a separate budget: without good content, even the best design looks empty.

A ready-made solution or a custom solution

A template is cheaper up front, but it’s harder to adapt to your business processes. Custom development is more expensive, but you won’t have to pay later to work around someone else’s limitations.

Hidden costs that are often overlooked

  • Domain and Hosting — an annual payment—small but regular.
  • Support. CMS and plugin updates, backups, and minor tweaks. A website that hasn't been updated for a year becomes vulnerable.
  • Promotion. A finished website does not attract customers on its own. SEO or advertising requires a separate budget, and that budget usually exceeds the annual cost of development itself.
  • Post-launch refinements. The first few months will show what works and what doesn't. Set aside a reserve of 10–15% for revisions based on the analyst's data.

How to Compare Offers

When you receive several commercial proposals, compare their content rather than just the final price:

  • Is it optimized for mobile phones and tablets?
  • How many unique design layouts are there?
  • Who writes the lyrics?
  • Is basic SEO optimization included: titles, meta tags, sitemap, and page speed?
  • How many revisions are included in the price, and what counts as a revision?
  • Who owns the source code and access rights after delivery?
  • What about support: Is there a warranty period, and how much does it cost afterward?

The cheapest offer almost always means that something has been left out of the list above. The only question is whether you'll find out about it before or after signing the contract.

In Brief

The price of a website isn’t based on a per-page rate, but rather on the scope of work. Describe your business’s goals rather than the specific set of pages you want: that way, the contractor will propose a solution, and you’ll receive a quote that won’t double midway through the project.
